FDR’s approach to stabilizing the economy and creating employment was called the New Deal. One of FDR’s favorite New Deal programs was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). It gave young men, aged 18-24, jobs creating recreational trails and facilities many of which are still in use today.

The young men working for the CCC were provided with a warm, safe place to sleep and three square meals a day. In addition, they earned about a dollar a day; five they kept for themselves the rest was sent home to help their parents get by. During the Great Depression this was considered a very good deal.

The CCC built over 800 new State Parks, erected more than 89,000 miles of telephone lines, planted nearly three billion trees and created __________ miles of nature trails.
